Artist Statement
Vanitas
Vanitas creates conceptual music at the intersection of philosophy, mythology, technology, spirituality, and cultural memory.
Each project begins with a question large enough to require a world.
Songs become chapters. Recurring symbols become a language. Genres become vessels capable of carrying the philosophical weight of the narrative.
The work does not use artificial intelligence to eliminate authorship.
It uses artificial intelligence to expand the field in which authorship can operate.
The process is conversational, iterative, and embodied. Ideas are generated widely, tested against lived experience, rewritten through reflection, and preserved only when they become capable of carrying their own weight.
Vanitas treats AI as perspective, instrument, collaborator, and mirror.
Never as authority.
About the Name
In art history, vanitas refers to works that confront mortality, impermanence, ambition, beauty, and the inevitable decay of worldly achievement.
The symbols are familiar:
The skull.
The extinguished candle.
The fading flower.
The overturned cup.
The instrument no longer being played.
They remind the viewer that accumulation cannot defeat time and that value cannot be separated from the way a life is lived.
The name fits this project because The Space Between asks a related question of technology:
What remains meaningful when creation becomes abundant?
When answers, images, products, and entire worlds can be generated at extraordinary speed, value moves away from mere production.
Judgment becomes scarce.
Attention becomes sacred.
Embodiment becomes the art.
